The Definition of ADD and ADHD

Although the American Psychological Association now refers to ADHD as one disorder with three distinctive types, many people still refer to ADD separately from ADHD.


Understanding How The Definition of ADD and ADHD Has Changed

According to tbe American Psychological Association, ADHD is now one condition, divided into three types:


  • Hyperactive

  • Inattentive

  • Combined (most common)


ADHD: Inattentive Type

What used to be defined as ADD, with symptoms such as inattention, distractibility, forgetfulness, and difficulty organizing tasks, would now be referred to as ADHD: Inattentive Type.


ADHD: Hyperactive Type

With ADHD Hyperactive Type, symptoms typically include impulsivity, impatience, short fuse, restlessness, trouble taking turns, hyperactivity and more.


 ADHD:Combined Type

ADHD Combined Type is the most common type. It includes inattention, distractibility, forgetfulness, and difficulty organizing tasks, as well as impulsivity, impatience, short fuse, restlessness, and hyperactivity.


These are general symptoms, and each individual may experience ADHD differently.
